There is a kind of education measured less by degrees than by consequence. For Chadsel Chen, it began in the mid-1990s, writing production software for institutions operating at the level of IBM and AT&T—environments where systems are expected to work, not impress. He would later complement that foundation with an M.S. in Computer Science and an MBA from Columbia University, an MBA from London Business School, and more than ten IT and financial certifications. But the defining lessons came elsewhere: in systems that could not fail.

Those lessons were sharpened over a decade as Director of IT at a New York– and London–based structured credit hedge fund managing more than $9 billion in assets. There, technology was inseparable from trust—supporting risk, execution, and regulatory accountability across two financial centers. Chen oversaw multi-million-dollar budgets, coordinated more than twenty technology partners, and navigated the demands of U.S. and U.K. oversight. Much of the work was invisible—until it wasn't, often in the form of a late-night incident that left no room for error.

What emerged was a point of view shaped by pressure: the discipline that protects institutional capital is rarely available to the companies that may need it most.
